Water Activities
Basecamp Mafia Island is an ideal base for discovering the island’s diverse experiences, particularly its outstanding marine life. The surrounding waters are internationally recognised for diving and snorkelling on Mafia Island, with vibrant coral reefs, tropical fish, turtles and seasonal whale sharks offering unforgettable encounters. Guided diving and snorkelling trips can be arranged for all experience levels.
The fully-equipped dive centre for beginners and experienced divers offers PADI and NAUI certifications. The best months for scuba diving are September to March and snorkelling can be done all year round in the sheltered, calm waters of Chole Bay. Many islets and natural, unspoilt sandbars surround Mafia Island.
Above the water, guests can enjoy kayaking, paddleboarding and traditional dhow sailing along the coastline. Fishing excursions provide insight into local traditions, while guided village visits offer meaningful cultural exchange and a deeper understanding of island life.
Land Activities
On land, nature walks through coconut groves and mangrove forests reveal Mafia Island’s quieter beauty. Beach days are spent swimming, sunbathing or strolling along unspoilt shores. Evenings at Basecamp are relaxed and atmospheric, with fresh cuisine, ocean breezes and star-filled skies.
Chole island is home to a large colony of Comoros Flying Foxes or fruit bats found only in Mafia and the Comoro Islands and there are also some ancient ruins remaining on a few of the islets. The ruins date back to the 15th century from the first Arab settlers and are interesting to visit. One can also experience the friendly culture of the Swahili people with tours through the local villages.
There is a day trip to the Northern part of Mafia where you will get the to experience of the full diversity of the fauna and flora on the island, as well as see some of Mafia's most pristine and beautiful beaches.
